At the inception of the Institution, the first five Academic Departments were run in a manner that did not permit effective co-ordination of related disciplines, and with the increase in the number of programmes, it became imperative to reorganize the various programmes. As a result of this, in April 1982, all the academic departments which had risen to 29 were grouped into five Schools, each under a Director.

The Polytechnic has over 30,000 students running different programmes in three schools. LASPOTECH has earned a reputation as one of the foremost Polytechnics in Africa, in the fields of Management, Agriculture, Engineering, Environmental Studies and Technology. This is seen in the placement of our diplomates in various organizations, government ministries and parastatals.

All the schools and departments are active in research and in teaching, both of which are subject to external assessment.
The Quality Control body for the monitoring of Polytechnic Education, the National Board For Technical Education (NBTE), has mechanisms for monitoring teaching, learning as well as research. The core aspects assessed are: curriculum design, content and organization, teaching, learning and assessment, quality management and student progress.
